Columbine Memorial Committee to Gather Public Input

August 24, 1999

The committee created to develop a recommendation for a permanent memorial in response to the Columbine High School tragedy is beginning the process of gathering public input on possible memorial designs and locations. Officials from Jefferson County, Jefferson County School District and Foothills Park and Recreation District formed the committee shortly after the Columbine tragedy. Members include a cross-section of students, parents and faculty from Columbine High, a representative from families of the shooting victims, public officials from the coordinating agencies and residents of the Columbine area. Bob Easton, Executive Director at Foothills, is chairing the committee. (see committee list).

Since the first meeting of the committee, in late June, members have developed a mission statement and goals, and have created an organizational structure that includes several sub-committees. In the near future, the committee will begin gathering input and comments from the Columbine area community, from students, parents and faculty at the high school and from the families of victims of the shootings.

Over 150 design suggestions have been submitted for committee review. Most of the suggestions have come from Denver area residents. The committee, through its design sub-committee, has started the process of sorting and categorizing these suggestions. In addition to the general design suggestions, the committee has also received proposals from a number of professional sculptors and artists.

The committee is continuing to collect funds; donations to the Memorial fund now total nearly $35,000. The committee anticipates significant, additional contributions once the process of selecting a community-approved design has been completed. Nearly 20 area contractors and suppliers have offered to provide materials and in-kind services to assist in building a memorial, and the committee has received similar offers from local unions and contractors’ associations.
