FORMER PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON TO SPEAK AT
DINNER JULY 20
July 15, 2004
LITTLETON, CO – Former President
Bill Clinton will be the keynote speaker at an event to
benefit the Columbine Memorial Fund, which will be placed
in Clement Park, adjacent to Columbine High School.
Clinton has often acknowledged that the tragedy of the 1999
shootings at Columbine High School had a profound effect
on him, as he worried about encouraging values and leadership
in the next generation. He attended a memorial service for
Columbine victims and their families a week after the April
20, 1999 events.
In a message to the Littleton community one year after the
tragedy, President Clinton said: “In the midst of
the heartbreak and devastation of the Columbine tragedy,
we saw the American spirit at its best--in the spontaneous
outpouring of support for the Littleton community and in
the determination to prevent such tragedies in the future.
We must continue to honor their memory and your courage
by resolving to make America a safer place for all our children.”
According to committee chairman
Bob Easton, “The event will be a very special opportunity
to raise awareness, and significant funds to move forward
with the Columbine Memorial.”
The dinner will take place July 20 with an expected capacity
crowd in the Tower Grand Ballroom of the Adams Mark Hotel
at 16th and Tremont in downtown Denver.
Earlier this year, services marking the fifth anniversary
of the Columbine shootings caused renewed interest in moving
forward with the memorial, which is slated for completion
in 2006.
