WAL-MART Donates $20,000 to Memorial Fund

May 5, 2004

Littleton, CO - The Columbine Memorial Committee announced today that two Littleton Wal-Mart stores donated $20,000 to the Columbine Memorial Fund. The donation will be used to support the construction of a permanent memorial honoring the innocent victims of the April 20, 1999 shootings at Columbine High School.

The check was presented at the Coal Mine War-Mart by Dave Dooley, Manager of the Quincy store, Keith Mays, Manager of the Coal Mine store, John Jones, District Manager, Sandy Harris, District Loss Prevention Supervisor, and several associates from both stores to members of the Columbine Memorial Committee.

Robert Easton, Chairman of the Columbine Memorial Committee accepted the check on behalf of the committee, "we are thrilled with the generous contribution from Wal-Mart, and their commitment to supporting issues in local communities. Recent coverage of the memorial project has sparked a renewed interest in the project and donations such as this one will go a long way toward reaching our financial goals. We are extremely grateful for Wal-Mart’s corporate and local support.”

Wal-Mart’s contribution represents one of several donations that have been received in the last several weeks by the committee. The recent Columbine fifth anniversary events, as well as the memorial committee’s major fundraising campaign, have sparked a renewed interest in the project.

Currently, the memorial fund is 26% of the way toward reaching the $2.5 million that is required to construct the memorial (that total includes $1.5 million in cash and $1 million in in-kind services).
