Committee Selects Memorial Site

May 11, 2000

The Columbine High School Committee today announced the selection of a site in Clement Park for the permanent memorial to the Columbine High School shootings. The selected site is the valley between two hills near the eastern portion of the park and south of the park’s maintenance building. The selection was made at a recent committee meeting after a review of 13 possible sites. The choice was announced today after review by those injured in the incident, their families and the families of those killed during the tragedy.

According to Robert Easton, Committee Chairman, the site was chosen due to its quiet and secluded nature together with its general proximity to the school. Easton said, "the site is in a separate area, distinct and somewhat secluded from the rest of the park. This site will allow us to build an appropriate memorial without imposing on current or future park users and activities. There is partial visual contact from this area to the school, which has become a desired feature, particularly from the high school students who provided their input into the process at a recent forum conducted at the school."

Now that a site has been chosen, the next step in the memorial process will be to begin work on the memorial design. A design team headed by DHM Design of Denver will commence work this week on several design alternatives. The committee, working with those directly with those involved in the tragedy, currently plans to review alternatives in June with the hope of making a final design selection in July of this year. An April 20, 2001 dedication is planned for the completed memorial.
