Columbine Memorial Committee Launches Phase II of Fundraising Campaign

April 15, 2004

Littleton, CO – The Columbine Memorial Committee announced today the launch of Phase II of the fundraising campaign (known as “The Heart of Columbine”) to raise $2.5 million to completely construct and landscape the permanent memorial honoring those killed and injured in the April 20, 1999 shootings at Columbine High School. Local and national community members, businesses, and philanthropic foundations will be invited to participate in the funding campaign.

A professional fundraiser, Ann Roecker of Roecker Consulting Group, will now assist the Committee in its efforts, with a cohesive approach to bringing new contributions to the project and moving it forward to completion.

Bob Easton, Memorial Committee Chairman, said, “All of those involved with this project are excited about this new fundraising approach. Contributions have been averaging about $30,000 per month since the beginning of the year and have come from some major local supporters such as the Phil Long Ford Community Fund, Pinkard Construction, and Time Warner Communications. This renewed interest will hopefully bring us to the point where we can start construction soon. Community interest remains high ---- and we have the continued support of the families of those killed and injured on April 20, 1999. Our Committee remains firmly committed to whatever time frame is necessary to make this memorial a reality.”

Representatives from victim’s families, students, teachers, government and community leaders serve on the Columbine Memorial Committee. The Committee has completed Phase I of the fundraising effort to build the Columbine Memorial. Nearly $300,000 in cash was raised during this phase to identify and secure the Memorial site, gather public input and complete the design for this symbol of remembrance and healing. Another $350,000 in pledges and in-kind services has been raised to date for construction purposes.

DHM Design completed the design for the Memorial – which is being considered as the official, public memorial remembering the Columbine High School tragedy. The design won the “2003 Merit Award for Planning & Urban Design” from the American Society of Landscape Architects/Colorado Chapter.

The Columbine Memorial will be located at Clement Park, directly west of Columbine High School. The Memorial will be situated between two small hills, one of which is known as “Rebel Hill,” near the site of the spontaneous memorials that arose in the park in the weeks after the shootings. More information on the memorial design, the Committee, and project contributors is available at the Memorial Website www.columbinememorial.org.

The design of the Memorial will be featured on display at the Memorial site in Clement Park on April 20, prior to the 5th anniversary remembrance event scheduled for 6:00 PM that day.
Design boards depicting the memorial design were recently on display at Columbine Public Library and are displayed permanently on the Memorial Website.
