The Columbine Memorial Committee announced today that the March and April 2007 funding campaign for the Columbine Memorial has been very productive. Committee Chairman Robert Easton said, “Our current public campaign has generated contributions from throughout the metro area and the country, including a recent and significant anonymous donation. We have a few fundraising efforts yet in the works that we want to see through fruition, including a motorcycle ride on May 12 organized by c2cride.org, and we also have some funds that were pledged but not yet received. Once those efforts are completed it appears we will have generated the funds necessary to finish the construction work by early summer.” The Committee emphasized that though full funding is “very close” final costs remain subject to changes in construction costs, commitments made for in-kind services, and collection of approximately $30,000 in pledged but not received funds.
The May 12 motorcycle ride will be the final public fundraising event to generate funds needed to complete memorial construction. The ride will depart from Centennial Community Church in Littleton and go to Lakeside Amusement Park. The c2c ride organization is dedicated to raising money to fund grants to increase school safety across the United States. Details about the ride can be found online at www.c2cride.org.
Funding for the $1.5 million memorial project has come from over 2,500 separate donors including individual, corporate and non-profit donations, along with funds from special events such as the summer 2004 fundraising dinner featuring President Clinton, groundbreaking ceremony efforts including a $50,000 matching grant from the Raccoon Creek Golf Course, and a significant contribution from the HOPE fund. Over $400,000 of the construction funding has come in the form of in-kind donations from local contractors and suppliers. Construction is being coordinated through in-kind services provided by local contractor Pinkard Construction. The Memorial Committee is extremely grateful to everyone who has donated time, energy, and money to make the memorial a reality.
Work on the memorial is progressing well and the project is 70% complete. The Memorial Committee expects to make an announcement soon on a summer 2007 dedication date.
